The Five Parts of a Build
Your class decides which two weapons you can use, and the weapon decides your skills and combos. Stat points shape your raw numbers, while trait points unlock deeper combos, passives and skills for one weapon. Gear adds stats, but its weight also affects how much stamina (SP) your abilities cost.
XLGAMES plans to keep adjusting combat balance and character growth during Early Access, and a third weapon per class is on the way. Treat any build as a starting point that may need adjusting after patches.
- Class and weapon (classes guide)
- Stat (attribute) points, earned every level
- Weapon trait points, from Raeven's Coilstones
- Max HP, from Nui Tears
- Gear, rarity and equip load
The Six Stats and What They Do
Each level gives you attribute points to place by hand, and the character screen previews the change before you confirm. Strength, Agility and Intelligence scale differently depending on your class. Constitution, Talent and Endurance give identical benefits to all four classes.
- Strength: physical attack and physical penetration. It scales best on the Warrior and Berserker.
- Agility: critical hits and physical damage. It is a strong option for the Ranger.
- Intelligence: magic attack and magic penetration, the Mage's main stat.
- Constitution: HP and resistance to physical and magic damage amplification.
- Talent: elemental damage (fire, tidal, wind and fog), defense and maximum equip load.
- Endurance: sustainability and stamina, so you can keep attacking and dodging.
How Stat Scaling Differs by Class
One stats guide measured the numbers in the demo. Each point of Strength gave the Warrior and the Berserker 1.3 physical attack and 0.1 physical penetration, but gave the Mage only 0.6 physical attack. So put your main points into the stat your class scales with.
Constitution is the same for everyone: each point gave 7.2 HP plus 0.7 physical and 0.7 magic amplification resistance. These values come from the demo build and may change in Early Access.
A Simple Starter Stat Spread
A common tester approach was to put 2 points per level into your main stat and 1 into Endurance. The main stat is Strength for Warrior and Berserker, Agility or Strength for Ranger, and Intelligence for Mage. Endurance helps because attacks and dodges both cost stamina, and running out mid-combo is dangerous.
Spend your points every level rather than saving them. If you keep running out of equip load for heavier armor, Talent is the stat that raises it. The leveling guide explains where your levels come from.
Trait Points and Raeven's Coilstones
Trait points are a separate currency and do not come from leveling. You earn them by breaking Raeven's Coilstones, which are scattered through the world and guarded by bosses. Once the boss is down, you can break the stone for trait points.
Each weapon has its own trait tree, which unlocks combos, passives and skills. Decide which weapon gets your first points, because spreading them thin slows you down. If a Coilstone boss is too hard, explore elsewhere and come back stronger.
Nui Tears and Max HP
Nui Tears are found while exploring. Turn them in at a Nui Statue for Nui's Blessing, which raises your maximum HP. The first upgrades are cheap, but each one after that costs more tears.
Nui Tears don't appear on the map; a stone icon shows only when you're close. Turning them in also gives some experience. See the map guide for how exploration works.
Gear, Weight and Tempering
Your equipment has weight. Depending on how much of your maximum equip load you use, you fall into light, medium or heavy, and each tier changes how much SP your abilities cost. Heavy armor pushes SP costs up, so a heavier set is not always better.
Gear comes in uncommon, rare, epic and legendary rarities, and higher tiers generally weigh more. You can upgrade gear by tempering, using materials from dungeons. You can also craft one of your class's weapons yourself; see crafting.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many stat points do you get per level?
Three per level in the demo. You place them in Strength, Agility, Constitution, Intelligence, Talent or Endurance.
How do you get trait points?
Break Raeven's Coilstones after defeating the bosses that guard them. Trait points do not come from leveling.
Does each weapon have its own trait tree?
Yes. Each weapon has a separate trait tree, so choose which weapon gets your points first.
What does Talent do?
Talent raises elemental damage, defense and your maximum equip load.
Does armor weight matter?
Yes. Higher equip load moves you from light to medium to heavy, which raises the SP cost of your abilities.
